Android Users to Get Apple FaceTime via Qik?
-
Great news for Android owners. Qik, the mobile live video streaming app, wants to add Face Time capabilities. That’s right, any Android owner with a front-facing camera may be able to download the Qik app and video chat with iPhone 4 owners using Face Time.
Currently, the only Android smartphone with a front-facing camera is the HTC Evo 4G, on Sprint’s network. The cool thing about the Qik app is the fact that you are not tied to a WiFi-only connection to video chat unlike iPhone 4 (or the new iPod Touch) owners who can only use Apple’s Face Time via a WiFi-to-WiFi connection. So this means you can currently connect to other EVO phones over 3G (or 4G where available) in addition to using a WiFi connection. Of course, WiFi will give you a better stream than on a data connection, so be ready for some lag if you plan on doing a video chat over Sprint’s network.
[Update]The only thing Qik requires is for Apple to publish the necessary API’s, so Qik developers can tie it all together. We will see if Apple has relaxed its standards enough to play nicely with Qik and potentially a whole boatload of future phones equipped with front-facing cameras.
If Apple comes on board, this will be a big move for Qik because as more and more smartphones begin adopting the front-facing camera feature, Qik will already be in the forefront of the technology, and may be a packaged app with other future smartphones.
In addition to just phone-to-phone video chat capabilities, Qik has already been doing live mobile video streaming for quite some time. Qik is currently comes pre-packaged on the EVO, Epic 4G, Samsung Omnia II and Nokia’s N97 and N97 mini (check here to see if your phone is Qik-compatible). The Qik app has already been downloaded to a bunch of phones, and with the video chat support, looks to add an additional 75 million copies downloaded in 2011.
